- SHEFFIELD — Carl G. Hulsing Jr., of Sheffield, Iowa, passed away at the age of 86 on Jan. 29, 2016. at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 10, at First Grace Baptist Church in Sheffield, with the Rev. Ken Livingston presiding. Interment will be at Hillside Cemetery, Sheffield. Visitation will be 9 a.m. until the service time at the church.
Carl was born on Oct. 6, 1929, in Meservey, Iowa, to Carl Hulsing Sr. and Margaret (Gerdes) Hulsing. He grew up west of Sheffield until 1944 when his family moved to rural Rockwell, Iowa, where he began farming with his dad. At an early age he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at Grace Baptist Church in Sheffield.
He was united in marriage to Fannie Folkerts in Sheffield, Iowa, in 1956. They lived on a farm south of Mason City, Iowa, where they were blessed with three daughters, Carla, Renee, and Rhonda. While farming he also worked at Crystal Sugar Beet Plant, Montgomery Wards, Wayne’s Feeds, and Lindsay Bros. Farm Machinery. In 1974 he resided with his mother in Rockwell, where he continued to work and help neighboring farmers and friends while caring for her.
He was an active member of First Grace Baptist Church in Sheffield, Iowa, serving as an usher, helping with church activities, and participating in Men’s Prayer Breakfast.
As of 2010, Carl resided at the Sheffield Care Center. Later that year he was crowned king of the Sheffield Sourdough Days celebration representing the Care Center. He enjoyed many activities at the Care Center including bingo, church services, visiting family and friends, and joking with the employees. He also enjoyed watching TV game shows and basketball and baseball games. He enjoyed attending tractor pulls, Grandpa’s Farm at the Franklin County Fair, farm auctions, and stock car races. He loved antique tractors and his favorite was farming with his 1962 Allis Chalmers D17.
Left to cherish his memory are daughters: Carla Hulsing of Sheridan, Wyoming, Renee O’Connor of Jesup, Iowa, and Rhonda Milbrandt of Hampton, Iowa, the mother of his children: Fannie Foss of Sheffield, Iowa, granddaughters: Allison and Lindsey Milbrandt of Hampton, Iowa, grandsons: Derek and Jeremiah Jacobson; great-grandson: Ryder Clements Jacobson all of Kansas City, Missouri; brothers: Myron (Shirley) Hulsing of Rockwell, Iowa, Don (Virginia) Hulsing of Rockwell, Iowa, and Vernon (Bev) Hulsing of Mason City, Iowa, and 13 nieces and nephews.
Carl was preceded in death by an infant son, his parents, son-in-law Kevin Milbrandt, his sister Lennetta Frey, and Bernadine Hulsing.
